Maharashtra Seamless Ltd. (MSL) was incorporated on May 10, 1988. The company was conceived after noticing huge demand and supply gap in the seamless pipe market, which was met mostly through imports. This import substitute project was set up in 1991 at Nagothane (near Mumbai), Distt. Raigad (Maharashtra), to manufacture seamless pipes & tubes with the finest quality and wide product range using the world renowned CPE technology acquired through technical collaboration with Mannesmann Demag Huttentechnik Gmbh (MDH), Germany at a capital cost of Rs. 69 crores. The project was appraised and financed by ICICI in participation with IDBI & IFCI and other banks. Mannesmann Demag is a world leader in steel and seamless pipe industry. Our state of the art plant is only the third of its kind in the world. The plant was commissioned in February 1992. The main plant and machinery was imported from USA based on MDH design. The plant has a present installed capacity to produce 1,50,000 TPA of Carbon & Alloy Steel Hot finished and cold finished Seamless Pipes and size range is from 10.3 mm to 177.8 mm O.D. (1mm to 22 MM W.T.) and the product and process quality have been recognized by Indian Boiler Regulation (IBR) and American Petroleum Institute (API). In addition, facilities are also available for heat treatment of sizes ranging from 2 3/8" to 13 3/8" O.D.

MSL subsequently expanded its Production Facilities, using PLUG MILL technology supported by World Class Reelers, to manufacture for the first time in India large size Seamless Pipes of diameter upto 20" and wall thickness upto 40 mm. Now with this new expansion the total installed capacity of Seamless plant is 350000 TPA.

MSL plant is strategically located on National Highway No. 17 about 130 Kms from Mumbai at Nagothane, Pipe Nagar, Village Sukeli, Taluka Roha, B.K.G. Road, Distt. Raigad. It possesses around 100 acres of land. It is situated near to major consumption center, which caters to high growth industries. The nearest railway station is at Nagothane, which is 10 Kms. away from site and the nearest port is Mumbai.

To further augment its presence in the pipe industry, MSL made a foray in the ERW pipe category in the year 2000. It has put up a plant at Raigad, Maharashtra, capable of producing ERW pipes having OD range between 168.3 mm to 530 mm OD and wall thickness of 3.2 mm to 12.7 mm with present installed capacity of 200000 TPA, making India's first par excellence largest outer diameter pipe manufacturer using ERW technology. The quality is unsurpassed and the product well accepted & appreciated in the market. This plant is catering for requirement of large diameter ERW pipes for applications in the field of natural gas, crude oil, refineries and other core sector industry like fertilizers etc.

Today Maharashtra Seamless Limited can meet customer's requirements both for Seamless and ERW pipes. This has contributed in overall improved performance of the company. The turnover of the company for the year ended 31.03.2013 is approx. Rs. 1710 crores

During the financial year 2006-07 the company has successfully commissioned coated line pipe facility by using the latest technology for FBE and 3 layer PE/PP coating near to the existing facility at Nagothane.

During the financial year 2007-08 the company has acquired Seamless Plant from Romania having an installed capacity of 200000 TPA to manufacture Seamless Pipe upto 6"OD. The plant has been completely dismantled and relocated to India at Mangaon, Vile Bhagad, Maharashtra near the existing plant. Plant is commissioned on March 2012

Hot Finished Pipes & Tubes

MSL has 3 hot mills with different process technologies to cover a wide size and grade range.

CPE (Cross Piercing & Elongation) process is suitable for small diameter thin-medium wall carbon-low alloy grade pipes & tubes and has a range upto 7". The process ensures close variation of the wall thickness and minimizes longitudinal & transverse defects. This is a highly versatile process which can even roll any odd size within its range.

Plug Mill process is suitable for large diameter thick wall carbon-medium alloy grade pipes and has a range of 8" - 14". While the plug controls the ID, world-class reelers are used to achieve close tolerance on the wall thickness. The process is capable of rolling pipe thickness of upto 40 mm. MSL produces expander pipes in diameter 16" - 20" to meet the requirements of large diameter pipes.

MPM (Mandrel Pipe Mill) process is suitable for small diameter thick wall carbon-high alloy grade pipes & tubes and has a range of 6". Elongation through six stand continuous rolling mill with high precision mandrel in this mill ensures smooth surface and close OD & thickness tolerance

Cold Pilgered / Cold Drawn Tubes

MSL has a nos. of Draw Benches & Pilger Mills to meet the requirements CDS pipes & tubes of its customers. While cold drawing is a simple process, pilgering is a little more complicated process. Cold drawing gives only longitudinal stress whereas pilgering imparts both longitudinal & transverse stress in the form of constant gentle hammering. As a result the structure in pilgering is compact & globular. Pilgering is necessarily done for Bearing Tubes and high alloy tubes. We have full atmosphere controlled furnace for all types of heat-treatment like Annealing, Tempering & Normalising to meet the requirements of the Specification and customer. We can also meet customer's needs of special sizes.

Internal Coating

Maharashtra Seamless Limited (MSL) manufacture and supply internal coated pipes (epoxy coated). A spraying nozzle has been used to spray the liquid epoxy inside the pipe as per the required thickness. Before applying the epoxy paint, internal surface of the pipe is cleaned. The typical coating thickness for gas pipelines varies between 60 to 100 um and for water and other liquids it varies between 200 to 500 um.
